Dynamos bring Notts unbeaten run to an end

Durham won their second FLt20 game of this year’s competition by beating Notts Outlaws by 33 runs at Emirates Durham ICG.
The Dynamos won the toss and elected to bat first and openers Phil Mustard and Gordon Muchall immediately put the visitors under pressure scoring freely in the opening three overs before confusion led to Muchall being run out by Steven Mullaney for 11.
This brought Ian Blackwell to the crease and for the next eight overs the pair dominated the Outlaws bowlers, in particularly England spinner Samit Patel who went for 46 off his four overs, in a partnership of 79.
It was Mustard who was the main aggressor in the pair scoring his runs at a strike rate of nearly 200 per 100 balls and he delighted the Durham faithful with a variety of strokes to bring up his fifty in just 28 balls.
The Dynamos were cruising at 11 an over with Mustard and Blackwell in the middle but this was ended when Mustard was well stumped by Chris Read off the bowling of Mullaney but only after reaching an outstanding 75 off 41 deliveries with the score at 123.
Blackwell took up the impetus after the departure of the wicket-keeper in a good partnership with Paul Collingwood as the England pair moved the Dynamos near the 150 mark before Collingwood was bowled by Andrew Carter for eight.
This started a collapse in the Durham innings as Blackwell soon joined his team-mate in the pavilion when he was run out for 43 by Mullaney and was quickly followed by skipper Dale Benkenstein also run-out for as the hosts slumped to 155-5.
David Miller tried to keep Durham’s run rate up with some solid hitting late on to push Durham over the 170 mark which was boosted when bowlers Liam Plunkett and Mitchell Claydon also provided valuable runs to allow the Dynamos to post a huge total of 187-7.
The Outlaws, needing 9.40 runs an over, attacked the Durham opening bowlers from the off in particularly Alex Hales who took 20 runs off one Graham Onions over as they looked to get above the run rate.
Hales onslaught was stopped in the fourth over when he dragged a delivery from Chris Rushworth onto his own stumps for a decent knock of 26 from 15 balls.
Australian Adam Voges picked up from where Hales left off and continued to find the boundary in a partnership of 68 with Riki Wessels as the Outlaws tried to keep their attacking impetus going to keep up with the Dynamo’s staggeringly high rate.
The pair were going along well until Blackwell got the breakthrough Durham craved when he removed Voges for 46 when he was caught well by Collingwood on the edge of the 30 yard circle.
This started a collapse in the visitors batting line-up as Wessels, Patel and Hussey all came and went quickly after that as spin proved to be their downfall as Blackwell and Gareth Breese picked up the wickets of Patel and Hussey respectively while Wessels was well run-out by Collingwood.
The required run-rate began to soar above 10 an over and this was made even more unlikely once Chris Read was caught on the boundary by Claydon off the bowling of Breese as he attempted to get the big runs Notts needed.
Mullaney and Scott Elstone managed to get the Outlaws above 150 in a late foray but their resistance was ended in the final over by Chris Rushworth who had them both caught when looking for the boundary which sealed victory for the Dynamos as Notts finished on 154-8, 34 runs short of their target.
The result leaves Durham second in the Friends Life t20 after six games three points behind the Outlaws. The Dynamo’s next fixture is away to Notts on Thursday 16th June at Trent Bridge.
