Samuels focuses on regional cricket

In an article in The Jamaica Observer, Gus Logie says that Marlon Samuels is "just focusing on what we have right now", following the 30 year old's omission from the West Indie' squad for the upcoming World Cup.

"The players know very well that certain thing are out of their hands and we're just going to control what we can control and all we ask Marlon to continue to do is keep his feet on the ground and continue to produce those big scores," Logie added.

Darren Bravo confident ahead of World Cup

West Indies middle-order batsman Darren Bravo is eagerly looking forward to playing in his first ICC Cricket World Cup. The left-handed stroke-maker, who turned 22 last Sunday, said it has always been a dream of his to wear the Windies maroon colours in the biggest event in the cricket world.

“I want to go out and do my part and help the West Indies to have a great World Cup. The Coach has given me the backing and I have the confidence to go out and perform at that crucial position – batting at Number 3,” he said.

“This tournament is going to be a big challenge for me but I am always someone who thinks of the positive. A big challenge equals a big opportunity,” Bravo reasoned.

Joey Carew passes away

West Indies left hand opener and later selector, Joey Carew, has passed away at age 73 at his home in Trinidad. In the words of Christopher Martin-Jenkins, "perhaps his greatest legacy to West Indies cricket, however, lies in the advice and encouragement he gave to a young left-hander from Santa Cruz in Trinidad. Brian Lara rewarded Joey Carew richly for the interest he showed in him."

David Bernard Jr: Heart and Commitment

During Jamaica’s training camp ahead of the Caribbean T20, newly appointed coach Gus Logie experimented with the batting line up during trial games.  All-rounder David Bernard Jr was moved up the order…..way up the order…….opening the batting instead of coming in at number 7 or 8.

Those unfamiliar with the 29 year old cricketer’s career may have been surprised by that move, but to him, it was like coming full circle.   This Jamaica College alumni started his First Class career as an opener when he played for the West Indies ‘B’ team in 2001 in his debut season.

Questions surrounding the captaincy of the T20 team were recently asked when club mate Wavell Hinds was named to lead the Jamaica team. “Why not David Bernard Jr?” some asked. After all, he had just returned from leading the West Indies ‘A’ team against Pakistan, and not with disgrace.

Hall raises concerns over WICB’s spending spree

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) has expressed concern about a recent press statement in which the CEO of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is quoted as saying that the upcoming Caribbean T20 Tournament will cost the WICB over US$3million.  WIPA pointed out that the spend from this year’s event would now be added to the US$3 million which the WICB spent on last year’s tournament.  In all, the WICB would have spent over US$6million in the past seven (7) months on the two tournaments and they are yet to find a sponsor for this and other regional and international tournaments despite WIPA’s willingness to assist.
