I wanted to write about something else – perhaps the delightful fact that Jacob Martin will now lend his cover-driving skills to the Tihar Jail cricket team, or that charming exchange of pleasantries between SK Warne and that Dixit fellow – but this column ended up being about Chris Gayle. Why? Because Chris Gayle is unstoppable.
Eighteen year old Barbadian opener Kraigg Brathwaite has been named in the West Indies squad for the Second Digicel Test against Pakistan at Warner Park starting tomorrow.
Brathwaite has replaced left handed Grenadian opener Devon Smith as the only change in the squad. </p

The statements made by Professor Hilary Beckles which have generated so much debate have already been disseminated so widely that they bear no repetition in this commentary.

WICB PRESS RELEASE – Sunday’s win in the First Digicel Test was special for the members of the West Indies team, but especially “sweet” for some of the younger players who were tasting victory in a Test the first time.

PROVIDENCE, Guyana, May 15 (Reuters) – Captain Darren Sammy led his team to their first test win in more than two years on Sunday, taking five wickets as West Indies beat Pakistan by 40 runs after lunch on the fourth day.
Thirteen wickets went down on an action-packed second day at Providence which ended with West Indies ahead on a crumbling track. Legspinner Devendra Bishoo added to his burgeoning reputation with a probing debut spell that befuddled Pakistan's batsmen, giving West Indies a handy, and unexpected, first-innings lead.ESPNcricinfo has the full story

Professor Hilary Beckles recently a delivered the annual Frank Worrell memorial Lecture – “Frank Worrell: The Rise & Fall of West Indies Cricket”. More than a few persons have asked for my reaction to his image of Chris Gayle as ‘the don’, and his unfortunate analogy with the use of the words ‘don, don-man-ship and the don who was extradited to the United States to stand trial for criminal wrongdoing, Christopher Dudus Coke. </p

WIPA has asked for an investigation by the UWI since Beckles holds a most senior position at that institution and is involved with several cricket-related activities within the UWI including considerable responsibility for the High-Performance Centre and the Combined Campuses and Colleges Cricket team. </p

I have had the opportunity to listen to Professor Hilary Beckles’ speech made at a function in St Kitts and to hear a few sound-bites that he contributed to the documentary “Fire in Babylon.” I am of the opinion that the esteemed professor, for whatever reason, has not fully explored some of the fundamental issues affecting our game. In the following commentary, I seek to highlight one area in which Mr Beckles could have spent a bit more time reviewing, as he and others search for answers to some of the issues affecting our beloved game. </p
Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been named in a group of 15 players who will play a two-day practice game at the Demerara Cricket Ground in Georgetown on May 8 and 9, ahead of West Indies' Test series against Pakistan.
ESPNcricinfo has the story
Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s recent quarrel with Dr Hilaire, the inexperienced CEO of the WICB and the de facto leader of West Indies cricket, is very troubling. Equally troubling are Chanderpaul’s comments about management of West Indies cricket in general.
ESPNcricinfo has reported that the tension between Shivnarine Chanderpaul and the WICB appears to have eased slightly, with the batsman set to play in the Test series against Pakistan starting next week. The West Indies side for the first Test has not been officially released, but ESPNcricinfo has learnt from a reliable source that the squad includes Chanderpaul, who was axed for the one-day series that concludes in Guyana on Thursday.

The following is a letter from West Indies batsman Shiv Chanderpaul to the chief executive officer of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB):
This is to acknowledge receipt of your response, dated April 28, 2011 to my letter of April 27, 2011 in which I drew to your attention certain remarks you made, which were reported on the ESPN website cricinfo.com.
Those remarks conveyed the impression to right-minded persons that I was among the cricketers you considered ill-disciplined, that I did not apply myself to my job, that I thought I was a superstar, and where you generally belittled and dismissed my significant contributions to West Indies Cricket over the past 15 years. As you should appreciate these comments are not only capable of impugning my reputation but, when combined with your subsequent comments, are inconsistent , raise more questions and require proper explanation by you. </p
The WICB confirms that it has received an unsigned letter from WIPA sent on behalf of Shivnarine Chanderpaul.</p

In an ESPN Cricinfo column, Vaneisa Baksh writes: "No matter how repeatedly the WICB has referred to its selection policy to defend its choices (in the interests of fairness and transparency, wouldn't it be wonderful to find such a policy, say, on its website?) it has not convinced anyone that decisions were made solely to develop West Indies cricket, either to win the 2015 World Cup – such a politician's goal and time frame! – or to have a solid team in five to 10 years."
Former West Indies skipper and hard-hitting opener Chris Gayle has been roped in by the Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for left-arm paceman Dirk Nannes who has been ruled out of the remainder of season four of the Indian Premier League due to a side strain. </p

The following is a press release from the West Indies Players Association.
On Friday, September 25, 2009, before he became CEO of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Ernest Hilaire stated that Chris Gayle’s captaincy of the West Indies Cricket Team was not guaranteed. This was despite high praise from former West Indies Captain, Clive Lloyd, and other former greats, including Sir Garry Sobers, who described Gayle as a natural leader.
Subsequently, the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) made the point that Hilaire had not yet assumed the office of CEO and but had made statements that some might consider inappropriate and disturbing.<br /
via media statement:
Former West Indies Captain Jimmy Adams has opted not to renew his contract as Technical Director with the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) which expired at the end of March 2011. Adams, who has worked with the JCA since December 2008, had indicated his intentions not to renew his contract to the organisation in January 2011
"It has been my pleasure to work with the JCA for the past 2 1/2 years, and contribute to the growth and development of Jamaica cricket," said Adams. "I leave my post with wonderful memories, confident that cricket in Jamaica will continue to thrive and make its indelible mark on both the regional and international stage."
WICB CEO Ernest Hilaire said that while the Board has a policy of exposing more players to international cricket, there has been no move to axe any player permanently from playing for the West Indies.
“The selectors have a Selection Policy and are moving forward and building a broad pool of international players. The first action is to expose more players. And that does not mean that the WICB is abandoning older players,” Hilaire said as he participated in an exclusive interview with regional commentator Andrew Mason for the Mason and Guest radio show on the Starcomm Network.
Antiguan leg spinner Anthony Martin is the only uncapped player named in the West Indies One Day International squad for the First and Second Digicel ODIs against Pakistan in St Lucia.

WICB Expose has posted minutes of a WICB meeting (PDF) in July of last year, in which Ottis Gibson made a report to the board following the 2010 ICC World Twenty20. The report shows Gibson as highly critical of then captain Chris Gayle, noting that Gayle "was not a natural leader" and "is not a student of the game and lacks tactical awareness on the field".
Gibson's report states further that there is "no evidence of leadership qualities among the senior players" and proposes that in the future the board should "select team on character".
